Rodale Institute in Kutztown, PA is seeking a Research Farm Manager. The position is responsible for all farm operations: including short- and long-term planning and daily operations. The Research Farm Manager also supports activities with the education, communications and development teams forming a strong link between the farm activities and the mission of the institute to have impact. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Responsible for day to day activities of the farm operations department. (this includes all greenhouse, field, crop and livestock areas for research and production)Work with the research team to bring a farmer component to all research field plot designs.Create and manage several farm operation annual budgets for each affiliated farm location, including our main campus.Manage existing farm operations staff (at all affiliated farm locations), hire new staff as needed and budgetedRespond to any and all farm emergency situations on an on-call basis.Responsible for the procurement, safe operation and maintenance of all equipment and machinery tools and inventory.Assist in creating models for other small farm operations.Assist all SST staff members in carrying out their responsibilities.Promote sales of farm products: grains, grazing rights, vegetables and animal products through product development and customer relationships.Ability to participate in research projects; testing, gathering and compiling data.Work with external contractors for equipment and facility services.Assist in preparing and giving oral presentations to scientific communities, governmental decision-makers, private environmental groups, farmers and any other individuals or groups as necessary both on and off site.Perform other duties as assigned by management. QUALIFICATIONS: 5 or more years experience in organic production and/or managing a (research) farm.Working knowledge of soil science, agronomy, horticulture and/or animal husbandryExperience in the safe operating farm equipment.Ability to work in all types of weather.Capable of lifting in excess of 50 pounds.Possess good communications skills across many audience levels both written and verbal. Travel:Local travel to pick up supplies and parts to facilitate operational activitiesNational travel as needed for presentationsInternational travel as needed Other Institutional Expectations:To be professional, trustful and respectful to all staff and visitors, and a willingness to take ownership of work product.Flexible in work hours as farm work can be unpredictable. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor of Science or greater degree in an agriculture majorSeveral years of staff management
