Teachers College, Columbia University is hiring a Senior Director of Digital Communications to lead institutional web and digital communications for the College, with responsibility for developing and implementing digital technologies and strategies that support TC's priorities in enrollment marketing, fundraising, alumni engagement, and reputation enhancement. The position will manage a team of digital and multimedia professionals, and play a key role in strengthening and driving the College's digital presence. The position oversees the development, execution, evaluation and measurement of the digital communications strategy and plan; ensures that the Colleges key strategies are supported by current and emerging technologies through hands-on expertise and organizational capabilities; and provides critical support, training and guidance to academic departments and administrative units. The successful candidate will have proven experience developing and executing digital communications strategies that advance an organization's marketing, fundraising, and public relations objectives; leveraging technology expertise and rolling out digital capabilities mapped to strategic priorities; managing a team of digital specialists and content creators; and working collaboratively with information technology, marketing, development, alumni and academic units in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Through audience research and testing, analytics, content analysis, classification, and design, the Senior Director will ensure that TC's digital communications enhance the customer experience through exceptional content, consumption and conversation. This is a unique role for an accomplished professional to play both a hands-on and leadership role to drive strategy for digital communications, and to establish best practices for content, multimedia and engagement at a leading higher education institution of graduate programs in education, health, psychology, and leadership. The successful candidate will serve as both a catalyst and a link among the technology, marketing, communications, development and alumni areas to drive change and innovation. The position reports to the Associate Vice President for External Affairs and leads a team of four full-time employees. Key areas of responsibility of the position include: Leadership/Management: The Senior Director provides leadership to a team of digital communications professionals, multimedia and content creators. S/He leads the planning, budgeting, and forecasting of the digital communications team and oversees management of their respective areas of responsibility. The individual also plays a mentorship role, guiding team members, ensuring the honing of their skills, and cultivating them for continued growth and responsibility. Critical to the role is the building of organizational capacity/readiness to drive innovative digital communications, and the creation of internal systems and processes to support efficiency and effectiveness within the team and across the College. Technology: The Senior Director plays an important role as a technologist by providing hands-on expertise in web development and technical support as well as consultation to the Computer Information Systems (CIS) department, including the functioning of the website, related website and landing pages and the Colleges Content Management System (CMS) Terminal 4. As the bridge between the digital team and Computer Information Systems (CIS), the individual will help make sure employees get trained in new software applications as they become available and adopt these technologies to support strategic priorities. The position collaborates with the CIS, Enrollment Marketing, Development and Alumni Relations to identify and integrate new technology seamlessly and with the ability to measure effectiveness. Analytics: The Senior Director leads the team in defining key marketing metrics and manages the process of packaging these measurements into reports and dashboards to determine overall performance of web and other digital communications and programs, particularly as they relate to strategic impact and effectiveness. An important component of the position is to create a culture of data-informed thinking that uses analytics to inform strategy and communications. Strategy: The Senior Director, in conjunction with the AVP of External Affairs, Senior Director of Strategic Communications and Editorial Director, leads the digital team in creating and implementing strong content and distribution strategies that support enrollment, fundraising, student and alumni engagement and reputation management. The position will focus on creating content and integrated campaigns across the web, mobile, social, video and other multimedia that is focused on the customer experience, seeks to satisfy customer needs and interests and factors in the changing nature of customer behavior. Collaboration: The role of the Senior Director is highly collaborative, and will partner closely with colleagues in CIS, Enrollment, the Office of Digital Learning, Student Affairs, Development and External Affairs and Budget as well as with academic programs, labs and centers. Establishing strong relationships with stakeholders across the College as well as supporting cross-functional collaboration and projects is essential to the role. Minimum Qualifications: BA/BS degree in marketing, communications, computer information systems, and/or a combination of education and related professional level work experience of at least 12 years. Demonstrated experience as an industry bilingual, fluently speaking the language of both marketing/communications and technology. Proven track record of developing successful digital communications strategies and programs based on best practices and emerging technologies; and of specifically leveraging technology to support strategic priorities. Strong computing skills, including command of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery, PHP and MySQL, and Google Analytics. Experience administering or using web content management systems. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud Data-informed approach to developing strategic direction; Demonstrated experience and interest in leveraging audience research, contextual inquiries, analytics, and user testing in strategy and implementation to support strategic priorities. Demonstrated experience in creating winning mobile-first UX web design, content strategy, e-marketing and mobile campaigns, and ability to develop and execute production schedules. Experience with developing and curating a range of web and social content (owned, native, paid) for strategically adaptive placement and delivery across a range of devices and formats, including web, mobile, video and assistive technologies. Strong verbal and written communication skills; familiarity with digital writing that is optimized for high-quality user experience, clearly perceived calls to action, intuitive navigation, and persuasion. Familiarity with writing using html semantically to ensure accessibility, clarity, and Search Engine Optimization. Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with groups and organizations both internal and external to the College. Strong team-building, mediation, and coaching skills. Creative, innovative and excited by experimentation. Detail-oriented and willing to learn new skills and concepts. Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time to meet deadlines. Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team.
